Why area numbers grow so fast
A square foot is a square 1 foot on each side. Because there are 3.28 feet in a metre, a square metre holds 3.28 × 3.28 ≈ 10.76 square feet, not 3.28. The same applies to every area unit: square the length factor. That is the most common mistake in homework and when comparing flat sizes.
Worked example: a flat
An apartment listed as 85 m² is 85 × 10.7639 ≈ 915 sq ft. A room that is 12 ft by 14 ft is 168 sq ft, or about 15.6 m².
Tips

- A hectare is 100 m × 100 m. A football pitch is a little under one hectare.
- If you only know the length and width, multiply them first, then convert the answer.
