Why your site needs a sitemap
An XML sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to find. It helps new sites and pages with few links get discovered and indexed faster, and Google Search Console uses it to report which pages are indexed.
What goes in it
- Only pages you want in search, using the final address (with https and the same www or non-www form every time).
- No redirected, deleted, duplicate or
noindexpages. - Up to 50,000 addresses per file.
lastmod, changefreq and priority
| Tag | How much it matters |
|---|---|
| lastmod | Useful when accurate. Google uses it to know when to re-crawl. |
| changefreq | Ignored by Google; harmless to include. |
| priority | Ignored by Google; harmless to include. |
Submitting it
- Upload
sitemap.xmlto the top folder of your website. - Add
Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xmlto your robots.txt. - Submit the address in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
If your website software (such as WordPress with an SEO plugin) already makes a sitemap automatically, use that one instead, because it updates itself.
