How semester GPA works
Each grade has grade points, and each course has credit hours. Multiply them to get the course's quality points, add everything up and divide by the total credit hours:
GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours
HEC grading scale (4.0)
| Marks | Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| 85 and above | A | 4.00 |
| 80–84 | A- | 3.67 |
| 75–79 | B+ | 3.33 |
| 71–74 | B | 3.00 |
| 68–70 | B- | 2.67 |
| 64–67 | C+ | 2.33 |
| 61–63 | C | 2.00 |
| 58–60 | C- | 1.67 |
| 54–57 | D+ | 1.33 |
| 50–53 | D | 1.00 |
| Below 50 | F | 0.00 |
This is the uniform scale used by many Pakistani universities; some use their own cut-offs, so check your handbook. The calculator also supports the US 4.0 scale.
Worked example
A (4.00) in a 3-credit course, B+ (3.33) in a 3-credit course, B (3.00) in a 4-credit course and A- (3.67) in a 2-credit course:
(4.00 × 3) + (3.33 × 3) + (3.00 × 4) + (3.67 × 2) = 12 + 9.99 + 12 + 7.34 = 41.33 quality points. 41.33 ÷ 12 credit hours = GPA 3.44.
Tips
- Courses with more credit hours affect your GPA most, so prioritise them during exams.
- Non-credit courses and pass/fail courses usually don't count; leave them out.
- Combine several semesters with the CGPA Calculator.
