Tola and maund
Gold and silver in Pakistan and India are still priced per tola. One tola is 11.6638 grams, so 10 grams of gold is about 0.857 tola and one tola is a little more than 11.66 grams. The converter uses this standard value.
Wheat, rice and other crops are often sold by the maund (man). In Pakistan today a maund is taken as 40 kilograms. Older records and some regions used slightly different maunds, so if a figure looks wrong, check which one the document uses.
Worked example: your weight
If a scale shows 68 kg, multiply by 2.20462 to get pounds: 68 × 2.20462 ≈ 149.9 lb. In the UK body weight is often given in stones: 68 ÷ 6.35029 ≈ 10.7 stone.
Tips
- A tonne (metric ton) is 1,000 kg. A US ton is lighter (907 kg) and a UK ton heavier (1,016 kg).
- A carat (0.2 g) measures gemstones. Gold purity “carats” (karats, like 22K) are a different thing.
- Strictly, kilograms measure mass and newtons measure weight, but in everyday use “weight” means mass.
