Crop to the shape you need
Cropping removes the parts of a picture you don't want and lets you change its shape. Use a preset ratio to get the right shape straight away:
| Ratio | Used for |
|---|---|
| 1:1 | Profile pictures, Instagram posts, product photos |
| 4:5 | Instagram portrait posts |
| 16:9 | YouTube thumbnails, presentations, laptop wallpapers |
| 9:16 | Stories, Reels, TikTok and phone wallpapers |
| 4:3 / 3:2 | Standard photo prints |
For passport and ID photos, offices give the size in millimetres. A 35 × 45 mm photo is a 7:9 shape; choose “Free” and type the exact pixel size, or crop roughly and then use the Image Resizer to set the final size.
Tips for a better crop
- Use the rule of thirds. Place eyes or the main subject about a third of the way into the picture rather than dead centre.
- Leave a little space around heads and in the direction a person is looking.
- Straighten first. If the horizon is tilted, fix it with the Image Rotator before you crop.
- Crop before compressing. Removing unwanted areas makes the file smaller too; finish with the Image Compressor.
Does cropping reduce quality?
The pixels you keep are not changed, so quality stays the same. The picture simply has fewer pixels, which matters only if you later print it large or enlarge it.
