How CGPA is calculated
CGPA (cumulative grade point average) combines all your semesters. Each semester's GPA is weighted by its credit hours, so a semester with more credits counts more:
CGPA = (GPA₁ × credits₁ + GPA₂ × credits₂ + …) ÷ total credits
Worked example
| Semester | GPA | Credit hours | GPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3.20 | 18 | 57.60 |
| 2 | 3.60 | 17 | 61.20 |
| 3 | 3.45 | 18 | 62.10 |
| Total | 53 | 180.90 |
CGPA = 180.90 ÷ 53 = 3.41. A simple average of the three GPAs would give 3.42, which is why the credit hours matter: transcripts always use the weighted method.
Raising your CGPA
Because the CGPA is an average of everything so far, each new semester moves it less. Going from 2.80 to 3.00 after four semesters needs a strong semester, often above 3.5. Enter your past semesters and a “what if” GPA for the next one to see the effect before exams.
What CGPA do you need?
- Many universities in Pakistan require at least 2.00 to stay in good standing and graduate (check your own rules).
- Scholarships and many graduate jobs ask for 3.00 or above.
- Postgraduate admissions abroad often look for 3.00–3.30+ on a 4.0 scale.
