A step-by-step guide to working out your GPA and CGPA on the HEC 4.0 scale, with worked examples, the grading table and tips to raise your CGPA.
Your CGPA follows you from your first semester to your first job application. Yet many students only find out how it's calculated when something goes wrong. This guide explains the method most Pakistani universities use, with real numbers, so you can check your transcript and plan ahead.
GPA vs CGPA: what's the difference?
- GPA (grade point average) is the average for one semester.
- CGPA (cumulative GPA) is the average of all semesters so far, weighted by credit hours.
Both are on a 4.0 scale at most universities that follow the Higher Education Commission (HEC) grading policy.
Step 1: Turn marks into grade points
Each course mark becomes a letter grade and grade points. This is the HEC uniform scale used by many universities:
| Marks | Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| 85 and above | A | 4.00 |
| 80–84 | A- | 3.67 |
| 75–79 | B+ | 3.33 |
| 71–74 | B | 3.00 |
| 68–70 | B- | 2.67 |
| 64–67 | C+ | 2.33 |
| 61–63 | C | 2.00 |
| 58–60 | C- | 1.67 |
| 54–57 | D+ | 1.33 |
| 50–53 | D | 1.00 |
| Below 50 | F | 0.00 |
Some universities use slightly different cut-offs or relative grading, so check your student handbook. The method below stays the same.
Step 2: Calculate your semester GPA
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points. Add them up and divide by the total credit hours.
| Course | Credit hours | Grade | Grade points | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Programming | 4 | B | 3.00 | 12.00 |
| English | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Pakistan Studies | 2 | A- | 3.67 | 7.34 |
| Total | 12 | 41.33 |
GPA = 41.33 ÷ 12 = 3.44
Notice that the 4-credit course has the most influence. A B in a 4-credit course costs you more than a B in a 2-credit one. You can check this instantly with our GPA Calculator.
Step 3: Calculate your CGPA
CGPA uses the same idea across semesters: multiply each semester's GPA by its credit hours, add them, and divide by all credit hours.
| Semester | GPA | Credit hours | GPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3.20 | 18 | 57.60 |
| 2 | 3.60 | 17 | 61.20 |
| 3 | 3.45 | 18 | 62.10 |
| Total | 53 | 180.90 |
CGPA = 180.90 ÷ 53 = 3.41
A common mistake is to average the three GPAs: (3.20 + 3.60 + 3.45) ÷ 3 = 3.42. That's close here but can be wrong by more when credit loads differ. Your transcript always uses the weighted method. The CGPA Calculator does it for you.
What happens when you repeat a course?
Policies differ. At many universities, the new grade replaces the old one in the CGPA, but both appear on the transcript. Others average them. Ask your examination department, then enter only the grade that counts.
How much can one semester raise your CGPA?
The more semesters you've completed, the harder your CGPA is to move. Suppose you have a 2.80 CGPA over 70 credit hours and take 18 credits next semester:
| Next semester GPA | New CGPA |
|---|---|
| 3.00 | 2.84 |
| 3.50 | 2.94 |
| 4.00 | 3.05 |
The lesson: protect your CGPA early. The first two years have the biggest effect.
Five practical ways to raise your CGPA
- Prioritise high-credit courses. They move your GPA the most.
- Don't lose easy marks. Quizzes, assignments and attendance are often 20–40% of a course. Check your attendance with the Attendance Calculator so you're never barred from a final.
- Know what you need in the final. The Final Exam Calculator shows the exact marks needed for your target grade.
- Plan your hours. A guideline of 2 hours of self-study per credit hour is a good start; see the Study Hours Calculator.
- Use a timetable. Spacing subjects through the week beats cramming. Try the Study Timetable Generator.
Converting your CGPA to a percentage
Job forms often ask for a percentage. On the 4.0 scale the most common conversion is CGPA × 25, so 3.41 becomes 85.25%. Read our guide to CGPA to percentage formulas or use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3.0 a good CGPA in Pakistan?
Yes. A CGPA of 3.0 or above is the minimum many employers, scholarships and MS/MPhil programmes ask for. Above 3.5 is considered excellent at most universities.
What is the minimum CGPA to graduate?
Most HEC-recognised universities require a CGPA of at least 2.0 for a bachelor's degree, and often 2.5 or 3.0 for postgraduate degrees. Check your university's rules.
Do failed courses count in CGPA?
Usually yes: an F counts as 0 grade points with its full credit hours until you repeat the course and the new grade replaces it.
