How to convert CGPA to percentage on 4.0, 5.0 and 10-point scales, why different formulas exist, and what to write on job and admission forms.
You've finished your degree with a CGPA, and now a job portal, scholarship form or admission office asks for a percentage. Which formula is right? The honest answer: it depends on your grading scale and, sometimes, your university. Here are the common methods and how to choose.
The quick answer
| Grading scale | Common formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 4.0 (most Pakistani universities) | Percentage = CGPA × 25 | 3.20 → 80% |
| 5.0 | Percentage = CGPA × 20 | 4.10 → 82% |
| 10-point (CBSE, India) | Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 | 8.6 → 81.7% |
| 10-point (many other universities) | Percentage = CGPA × 10 | 8.6 → 86% |

Where does “CGPA × 25” come from?
On a 4.0 scale, multiplying by 25 is the same as dividing by the maximum and multiplying by 100: 3.20 ÷ 4 × 100 = 80%. It simply expresses your CGPA as a share of the highest possible CGPA. It's the conversion most widely used in Pakistan, and many employers apply it automatically.
Keep in mind it isn't a perfect reverse of the grading table. Under the HEC scale an A (4.0) starts at 85 marks, so a student with 4.0 didn't necessarily score 100% in every course. The formula gives a comparable figure, not your actual average marks.
Why universities print their own formulas
Because the simple formula doesn't match actual marks, some universities publish their own equivalence table or formula on the transcript or in their handbook. If your university has one, use it. It is the figure an employer or embassy will accept if they check. In the calculator, choose “My university's multiplier” and enter it.
India: why CBSE uses 9.5
For its 10-point CGPA, CBSE stated that multiplying by 9.5 gives an indicative percentage, based on the average results of top-scoring students. Many Indian universities use × 10 instead, and some use formulas such as (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 or (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. Again, the university's own rule takes priority.
Conversion table (4.0 scale, × 25)
| CGPA | Percentage | CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.00 | 100% | 3.00 | 75% |
| 3.80 | 95% | 2.80 | 70% |
| 3.60 | 90% | 2.60 | 65% |
| 3.50 | 87.5% | 2.50 | 62.5% |
| 3.40 | 85% | 2.20 | 55% |
| 3.20 | 80% | 2.00 | 50% |
Converting a percentage to CGPA
Reverse the formula: on a 4.0 scale, CGPA = percentage ÷ 25. So 78% is 3.12. This is useful when an application asks for a CGPA but your earlier qualification (such as an annual-system BA or BSc) gave a percentage. If the institution has its own equivalence chart, use that instead.
What to write on a job or admission form
- If the form has a CGPA field, enter your CGPA exactly as on the transcript, for example 3.41/4.00.
- If it only accepts a percentage, use your university's formula if it has one; otherwise CGPA × 25 on a 4.0 scale is the widely accepted choice.
- Where there's a remarks box, mention the formula, e.g. “CGPA 3.41/4.00 (85.25% using CGPA × 25)”.
- For official documents (embassies, foreign universities, HEC attestation), ask your university's examination office for an equivalence certificate.
