Why convert PNG to JPG?
PNG files are great for screenshots and logos but very large for photos. A photo saved as PNG can easily be 5–10 MB; the same photo as a JPG is often under 1 MB and looks the same. Converting is the quickest way to make a photo small enough for email, WhatsApp, a website or an online application form.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG can't store transparency, so see-through parts of a PNG have to be filled with a colour. White is the usual choice for documents and product photos, but you can pick any colour so the image blends with the page it will sit on. If you need to keep the transparency, use the WebP Converter instead, which supports it and still makes small files.
Which quality setting?
For photos, 85–90% is practically identical to the original. Drop to 75% if the file must be small. Screenshots with lots of text look best at 90% or higher, because JPG can blur sharp letters at low settings.
When not to convert
- Logos and icons with flat colours stay sharper and often smaller as PNG.
- Images you will keep editing lose a little quality each time a JPG is saved. Edit in PNG and convert at the end.
- Images that need a transparent background for a website or design.
