How to calculate percentage of marks

The formula is the same for every exam: percentage = marks obtained ÷ total marks × 100.

For example, if you scored 925 out of 1100 in Matric: 925 ÷ 1100 = 0.8409, and 0.8409 × 100 = 84.09%.

Worked examples

ExamMarksPercentage
Matric / SSC1012 / 110092%
FSc Part I468 / 55085.09%
Class test17 / 2568%
University midterm23.5 / 3078.33%

Percentage of a number and percentage change

The calculator has two more modes. % of a number answers questions like “What is 15% of 2,500?” (375), which is handy for discounts, tax and fees. % change compares two values, for example a result going from 72 to 81 is a 12.5% increase: (81 − 72) ÷ 72 × 100.

Percentage points vs per cent

If your marks rise from 60% to 66%, that's an increase of 6 percentage points, but a 10% increase relative to where you started. Both are correct; just make sure you say which one you mean.
