How much do I need in the final?

Enter what you have so far (sessional, midterm, quizzes) and how much the final is worth, and the calculator tells you the marks you need to pass or reach the grade you want.

Example in marks

Your course is out of 100: 60 marks before the final and a final exam worth 40. You have 38 out of 60. To finish with 70 overall you need 70 − 38 = 32 out of 40 in the final, which is 80% of the paper. To pass with 50 you need only 12 out of 40.

Example in percentages

If your grade so far is 72% and the final counts for 40% of the course, reaching 80% overall needs: (80 − 72 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 92% in the final. If the answer is above 100%, the target isn't reachable this time, and the calculator says so.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what I need in my final exam?

Take the overall marks you need (your target percentage of the course total), subtract the marks you already have, and that’s what you need in the final. In percentages: (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

What does “Not possible” mean?

Even full marks in the final wouldn’t bring you up to your target. Try a lower target, or talk to your teacher about other ways to improve your grade.

What is the passing percentage at university?

Most universities in Pakistan following the HEC scale need 50% in a course to pass, which is a D grade. Some programs and colleges use different pass marks, so check your course outline.
