US and UK units are different
The US and the UK both use gallons, pints and fluid ounces, but they are not the same size. A UK gallon is about 20% bigger than a US gallon, and a UK pint is 568 ml while a US pint is 473 ml. Recipes from American websites use US cups and spoons, which is what this converter uses for cups, spoons and fluid ounces.
Kitchen measures
- 1 US cup ≈ 237 ml (often rounded to 240 ml). A metric cup is 250 ml.
- 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons ≈ 15 ml.
- Cups measure volume, not weight: a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of sugar.
Other uses
Engine sizes are given in cubic centimetres (cc): a 1,300 cc car engine is 1.3 litres. Water tanks are often sold in gallons or litres, and one cubic metre of water is 1,000 litres.
