A simple workflow for students: photograph handwritten pages, turn them into a PDF, add a title page, number the pages and get the file under the upload limit.
Most universities now want assignments as a single PDF uploaded to a portal or Google Classroom. If you've written by hand, or have your work spread across several files, here's a quick, free workflow that gives a neat, readable PDF every time.
Step 1: Photograph your pages properly
- Use daylight near a window, and avoid your own shadow on the page.
- Hold the phone straight above the page so lines aren't slanted.
- Use a dark background, like a table, so the page edges are clear.
- Take one photo per page and check every photo is sharp before moving on.
If a photo includes too much table, trim it with the Image Cropper. If it's sideways, fix it with the Image Rotator.
Step 2: Turn the photos into a PDF
Open Image to PDF and choose all your page photos. Put them in the right order with the arrows, choose A4 as the page size and a small margin, then create the PDF.
Step 3: Add your title page
Most teachers want a title page with your name, roll number, course and date. Make it in Word or Google Docs and save it as PDF. Then use Merge PDF to join the title page and your assignment, with the title page first. You can also add a typed references list or appendix the same way.
Step 4: Check the order and remove extra pages
Open the merged file in Organize PDF. Move any page that's out of place and delete blank or repeated pages.
Step 5: Number the pages
Page numbers make your work easy to mark and look professional. In Add Page Numbers, choose the bottom centre or bottom right and turn on “Don't number the first page (cover)” so your title page stays clean.
Step 6: Get under the upload limit
Photos make large PDFs. If the portal says the file is too big, run it through Compress PDF on the Recommended level; handwriting stays readable and the file usually becomes a fraction of the size. See our guide on reducing PDF file size for strict limits.
Bonus: check your word count
For typed assignments with a word limit, paste your text into the Word Counter. Already have a PDF? Copy its text with PDF to Text first.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do all of this on my phone?
Yes. All the tools work in mobile browsers like Chrome and Safari.
Should I use JPG or PNG photos?
JPG. Phone cameras save JPG by default, and it keeps the PDF much smaller than PNG.
My teacher wants a Word file, not a PDF. What now?
Handwritten work can't become an editable Word file without retyping or OCR. Ask whether a PDF is acceptable; most teachers prefer it because it looks the same on every device.
