The four modes

ModeWhat it does
StandardNew words and sentence structure, same tone and length
FluentSmooths awkward phrasing so the text reads well
ShorterCuts repetition so the text is about a third shorter
CreativeFresher, more vivid wording with varied structure

Worked example

Original: “The government has announced that it will increase the budget for education in the next financial year.”

Standard: “Next financial year, the government plans to spend more on education, it has announced.”

Shorter: “The government will raise next year’s education budget.”

Paraphrasing and plagiarism

Changing the words does not make an idea yours. If you paraphrase a source in an assignment, you still need to cite it. Use the tool to understand a passage, to find a clearer way to say your own idea, or to avoid repeating yourself. Check the result with the grammar checker, or shorten long passages first with the text summarizer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the modes?

Standard rewords the text with the same tone and length, Fluent makes it read more smoothly, Shorter makes it about a third shorter and Creative uses fresher, more varied wording.

Does paraphrasing avoid plagiarism?

Not on its own. Ideas taken from a source still need a citation even when the words are different. Use the tool to express ideas clearly, and always credit your sources.
